October 17 Gallery Night - 6:00 pm tour details announced!

We will leave at 6:00 pm from the Graduate Hotel at 11 Dorrance Street, and return to the Graduate around 8:00 pm. This month, Gallery Night and The Avenue Concept (TAC) bring to you the first event of a three-part series titled“Gallery Night Providence and The Avenue Concept: Experience the best of both!”, showcasing Providence’s inviting indoor gallery spaces and vibrant outdoor art scene. This series is funded through a grant from RI Commerce.

This tour will be led by Gallery Night Guide Mike Camera and will be via trolley or mini coach. We will visit the following locations and exhibits:

  • Galerie le Domaine - Offers a showing of work by Jean-Paul Jacquet, an American painter, sculptor, muralist, published illustrator, and educator. Jacquet’s eclectic, expressive work is culturally and socially driven, reflective of his personal observations about the world and influenced by his travels.

  • RISD Museum - Get a taste of the many amazing exhibits that the museum has to offer! This month, explore their newest exhibition Listen!, curated by the RISD art circle, a group of teens from RI and MA.

  • Mural Activation: She Never Came / Salt Water / Empire Rising - TAC will host a Pop-up at the Mathewson Street Lot sharing stories of three spectacular murals: Garden of Journey’s Salt Water, BEZT’s She Never Came and Lauren YS’s NEW PVDFEST commissioned mural “帝国崛起 (Empire Rising)” - The Pop-up will feature a parking space takeover, illuminated and animated murals, art chairs by local artists, and complimentary cocoa & coffee.

This tour will be led by Gallery Night Guide Larisa Martino and will be via trolley or mini coach. We will visit the following locations and exhibits:

  • The Chazan Gallery at Wheeler - Presents the show Silver Linings at NE 48th Ave featuring the work of Kate Copeland and Ayumi Ishii. Copeland uses printmaking and alternative photo processes to ossify light and time into tangible artifacts while Ishii creates static, physical objects about fleeting human presence. Through their work, both artists explore the ephemerality of human existence.

  • Kreatelier - A fabric concept store and interior decor studio, features the work of Sara Ladds. Her collection’s balanced and bold patterns with vibrant colors are influenced by her background as an award-winning graphic designer from Rhode Island School of Design. Ladds will be present to share her work and process with visitors!

  • Studio Hop - A local studio and shop specializing in contemporary fine art, hand crafts, jewelry, ceramics, and clothing.

This tour will be led by Gallery Night Guide Danielle Wolfrum with Guest Guide Bob Dilworth, a beloved Providence-based artist and RISD graduate who has been painting and creating for over 55 years! We will visit the following locations and exhibits:

  • Anahid Ypres Art Studio - At Anahid Ypres’s studio you can get an inside look at the artist’s studio and appreciate seeing both in progress & finished paintings! Her work touches on subjects ranging from landscapes & the figure, to abstract still lifes. This month, explore the work of guest artist, Fior De La Cruz, who creates abstract paintings that glow under UV blacklight. The paintings are from her series “Looking Inwards” and draw inspiration from the ecosystem of coral reefs.

  • RI Center for Photographic Arts - presents Snapshot America: A Portrait of the United States in 2024. This exhibition, intended to act as a time capsule, represents everyday America from a multitude of individual perspectives and provides a chance to reflect on and record what America is today. Fading Glimpses of the Midwest is an accompanying solo presentation by Robin W. Bailey featuring documentation of the unique character of the American Midwest.

  • Art In The Atrium First U - An exhibit titled Family Ties, a celebration of family, art and creativity. Exhibiting artists include Michelle Guillet and her daughter, Autumn McIntyre with Bill Rice and his son, Jason Rice.The opening reception occurs on Gallery Night accompanied by light refreshments for viewers.

  • Mural Activation: She Never Came / Salt Water / Empire Rising - TAC will host a Pop-up at the Mathewson Street Lot sharing stories of three spectacular murals: Garden of Journey’s Salt Water, BEZT’s She Never Came and Lauren YS’s NEW PVDFEST commissioned mural “帝国崛起 (Empire Rising)” - The Pop-up will feature a parking space takeover, illuminated and animated murals, art chairs by local artists, and complimentary cocoa & coffee.

  • Bannister Gallery - Brings to viewers a body of work by Enrico Pinardi (1934-2021), a former professor of RIC’s own art department from 1967 to 1995. His work is a visual poetry that creates an atmosphere so saturated that it has an extraordinary power to transport and transform the viewer. This exhibition, curated by Professor Dianne Reilly, celebrates his life and art.

  • The Gallery at Sprout CoWorking - Presents “ScART”, a joint exhibition with the Pawtucket-based Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Through their programs, local cancer survivors have been able to use art as a tool for emotional healing. The exhibit “depicts the individual and collective strengths” of its 31 participants.

  • Grid Gallery - View “Outside The Lines”, an exhibition celebrating the talent and creativity of BIPOC Photographers who identify across the gender spectrum. This gallery champions the work of Queer BIPOC Photographers, empowering them with educational and professional development opportunities. Support their first group show as a new space in Providence’s arts community!

  • The Bell - Franklin Williams: It’s About Love, evokes love, death, humor, and other emotions through his use of motifs and shapes in works of diverse mediums. This survey exhibition spans the decades of his studio-based practice and conveys the intensity of emotion for different periods and people in his life.

This is a walking tour - make sure you wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather! In addition to murals and architecture along the way, we will visit the following locations and exhibits:

  • The Gallery at City Hall - Presenting the work of artists Kannetha Brown and Tarik Bartel in their exhibition titled YEAY YAI: An Ode to Grandmothers. Experience the stories of their beloved Southeast Asian grandmothers captured in each frame by these two talented portrait photographers.

  • AS220 Main Gallery - At AS220’s Main Gallery, appreciate two exhibitions. Founding Whimsy Wherever I Can engages viewers with playful work by painter and comic illustrator Moxie Popky-Gousie. Opening your Heart with the Energies of the Cosmos by Ewa Rose accompanies Moxie’s work with vibrant colors and lots of movement.

  • AS220 Aborn Gallery - On view in the Aborn Gallery is a show titled Pestilence by James Iannone. Born in Providence and raised in Cranston, Iannone has a long standing relationship with AS220; it was here that his first show was held in 1998!

This tour will be led by Gallery Night Guide Sam Nehila. We will visit the following locations and exhibits:

  • Bannister Gallery at Rhode Island College - Discover the talent of RIC faculty at the Annual Faculty Exhibition at Bannister Gallery. This exhibit invites the community to experience the research-based and interdisciplinary practices that shape the dialogues of the studio art department.

  • Bidon Community Print & Design Studio (with DESIGNxRI) - Bidon Community Print is a Black-owned letterpress print shop founded by Jacques Bidon, creating custom and handcrafted prints and print workshops.

  • Anyhow Studio (with DESIGNxRI) - Anyhow Studio is an inclusive ceramics studio that empowers early-career ceramic artists and beginners through community, experimental learning, creative flexibility, and reciprocity.

  • WaterFire Arts Center - WaterFire Arts Center opens a solo exhibit of the work of Jonathan Bonner, who delves into the playfulness of sculptural design by transforming everyday objects into intriguing art forms. As a NetWorksRI artist, this exhibition dives deeper into Bonner’s contribution to the contemporary RI art scene.

  • Art in the Atrium First U - Art in the Atrium presents its annual exhibit for the September Month of Peace, Women Artists of Peace: Christiane Corbet and Mimi Sammis. This exhibit explores sculpture by both RI artists who were devoted to peace.

  • Chazan Gallery at Wheeler - The Chazan Gallery at Wheeler is pleased to present Una Selva Oscura: Illustrating Dante’s Inferno, a solo show by Robert Brinkerhoff. His 35 drawings mirror the chronology of Dante’s narrative to study his own artistic processes and the pleasurable toil of an artistic practice.

  • Public Shop & Gallery (with DESIGNxRI) - Celebrate Latino Heritage Month at the Public Shop & Gallery’s How We Got Here, an exhibition focusing on the stories, artifacts, and art of Guatemalan migrants and descendants in Rhode Island.

  • The Gallery at City Hall - The Gallery at City Hall presents “There’s No Place Like Home.” For the past eight months, Carolina Briones has met with the seniors at Carroll Tower and Vatic Kuumba with the community at Chad Brown. Residents worked with these two artists to explore their individual talents and interests, while also building collective work and community. This is part of an initiative from One Nation / One Project, which aims to activate the power of the arts to repair the social fabric of our nation.

  • Bank RI Turks Head Gallery - BankRI Galleries showcases the work of Gib Smith, a painter who started out as a sculptor. “What speaks to me are pathways, in life and art,” says the artist. Never far from vast bodies of water, the movement of natural cycles permeates Gib’s work. Using acrylics and oils, his bold colors and non-linear shapes force the viewer to pause and study the dynamic contours.

  • World's Fair Gallery (with DESIGNxRI) - World’s Fair Gallery presents NUDE ARCHITECTURE: Women’s Painting Right Now, with vessels created by Ahmee Ceramics. Ahmee creates functional and contemporary ceramic pieces for everyday use with a harmonious design aesthetic.

  • Sprout CoWorking - Through Mindscape City at Sprout Coworking’s Gallery, explore memories of dreams, nostalgic retellings, and imaginary worlds to uncover the artists’ own take on a “mindscape.” Featuring the work of Amelia Rozear, Sichen Grace, Gaz Ehrreich, Jules Kang Sharpe, Ash Samuels, Imani Gardner, Teaghan Gokey, Jack Zhou, Dorian Epps, and Kai Gietzen.

  • AS220 Project Space - At AS220 Project Space, experience Contemplative Remains, an exhibit by Jamie Murphy Hlynsky. Pieces from across different mediums are selected to reflect on current or historical American icons and the issues they represent. In the Reading Room, To The Letter by Emily Coxe pairs early obsessive hand-lettered phrases in gouache work with more recent work that re-investigates the gestures of layering and warping.

  • Asterfields (with DESIGNxRI) - Asterfields is an independent design house where art meets life, celebrating the intersection of craft, color, and creativity. The studio designs products to be lived in, treasured, and worn out, and strives to inspire self-expression and celebrate the individuality of their customers. This month, they are thrilled to present Garden of Delights, an exhibit of mixed media paintings by Nicole Deponte.

  • Galerie le Domaine - Galerie le Domaine presents a solo exhibition of the works of Neal Walsh. Walsh’s work is primarily abstract, playing with the subtleties of light & variations of forms, evoking the urban mill he began his painting career in & the rural community where he now lives and paints.

  • RISD Museum - The RISD Museum has a variety of different exhibits on view. On the Gallery Night tour, you can get a taste of the many amazing exhibits that the museum has to offer! This month, explore their newest exhibition Listen!, curated by the RISD art circle, a group of teens from RI and MA.

  • Bela Monde (with DESIGNxRI) - An apparel and accessories brand founded by Lisa Limer and Johnnie Chace, crafting timeless coats and accessories that focuses on luxurious fabrics, pattern, and color.

  • AS220 Main Gallery - At AS220’s Main Gallery, appreciate two exhibitions. In Eveline Luppi’s Geometric Color Identity, Luppi reveals the complexities of contemporary life through meditative uses of color and geometry and her complex and explorative paint practices. Main Character Energy by Anthony Gregg presents a collection of works that explore the dichotomy of comfort and chaos. That visual play between tension and calm capture the events of processing surrounding environments.

  • AS220 Aborn Gallery - Explore the boundary between art, poetry, and the natural world with Realmz by RI artist, Natural. Natural presents a series of works that illustrate his visual and musical languages through a range of materials like spray paint, acrylic, and sculpture.

  • 134 Collaborative / Mathewson Street Church - Ewa Roselli and her daughter Chloe Moers connect their work in a joint exhibition on the beauty of nature. Ewa’s vibrant and intuitive large paintings, as well as her smaller nature-inspired watercolors, will be on display. Paired with each of the watercolors is a poem gently crafted by Chloe.

  • AS220 Main Gallery with three exhibits this month. “New Works” by Daniel Moran Sullivan. Using a combination of life drawings and digital editing, the artist explores the infinite possibilities of imagination, illustrating loved ones through as many lenses as possible. The next exhibit is “The Superposition of Bill Murray” by Piotr Butiewicz. In this series of digital collages, Butiewicz uncovers the mysteries of Bill Murray manifestations from years of dedicated research and presents a convention of Bill Murray entities from numerous multiverse dimensions. The third exhibit is “The Thing We Call Home” by Antoine Soued. Through a slow and detailed process of inking, hatching, dotting, and masking, Soued takes original photographs from major world cities and strips them down to atemporal negatives to reveal what is essential in its most naked form.

  • AS220 Aborn Gallery. Artists Asma Kazmi and Anabel Vasquez Rodriguez are revisiting their 2004 performance of “Ecolgias Solidaris” to explore new understandings on politics, colonial heritage and collective memory. Featuring heterogeneous images, objects and gestures, “Ecologias Solidarias” creates a vital space for dialogue and reflection.

  • AS220 Project Space, showing “You Caught Me Dreaming” by Renée Elizabeth Neely-Tanner. Reflected in a lyricism of materials and textures, this collection of abstract paintings honors spiritual presences and historical practices of making. This exhibit challenges boundaries placed on Black female creatives including the luxury to dream.

  • The Gallery at Sprout CoWorking presents “Strangers of Strangers” and the works of the following artists: Ana Popescu, Grace Weidner, Jaewon Hwang, Joohee Park, Kahee Bae, Katharine Frank, Keana Walters, Seongjoo Moon, Seungwon Baek.

  • WaterFire Arts Center. WaterFire Arts Center welcomes the work of over 100 artists in its new exhibit, NetWorks Rhode Island and the Chazan Collection: A Half-Century of RI Artistic Patronage. Celebrating the artistic community of RI & their champion, Dr. Joseph A. Chazan, this exhibit brings together a previous portrait project by Dr Chazan, works from his collection, & new submissions by RI Artists. Also enjoy sips, snacks, and live music as part of the weekly Thursday Night TroopTop celebration!

Mighty Voices: Petitioning for Change Throughout History features an array of original manuscripts written by Rhode Islanders past as they came together around a cause. 120 Years of the Rhode Island State House tells the story of the design, construction, and past and present uses of the State House.

  • “Germination” Mural at Rhode Island College. “Germination” is a new mural by Lena Mac commissioned by RISCA and Rhode Island College. Inspired by the natural world, Mac’s work combines figurative symbols with abstracted forms to create metaphorical spaces that contemplate mysterious aspects of the world around us.

  • New Harvest Coffee & Spirits. New Harvest presents photographs by Robert W. Easton in the exhibit Baubles, Bangles, and Beads: The Treasures of Wolf E. Myrow. Myrow is a jewelry supplier that provides vintage and new jewelry making supplies in a fascinating visual environment.

In Dodge House Gallery the Club will have artWORKS: landscapes, featuring young artists affiliated with Riverzedge Arts of Woonsocket.

July 18 Gallery Night - 6:30 pm tour details announced!

We will leave at 6:30 pm from the WaterFire Arts Center at 475 Valley Street, and return to the WaterFire Arts Center around 8:30 pm.

This tour will be led by Gallery Night Guide special guest guide Rex M. Blumenthal and will be via trolley or mini coach. We will visit the following locations and exhibits:

  • The Gallery at Sprout CoWorking presents Growth!, a showcase of young Providence artists & their interpretation of growth & change within themselves & their community.

  • WaterFire Arts Center. WaterFire Arts Center welcomes the work of over 100 artists in its new exhibit, NetWorks Rhode Island and the Chazan Collection: A Half-Century of RI Artistic Patronage. Celebrating the artistic community of RI & their champion, Dr. Joseph A. Chazan, this exhibit brings together a previous portrait project by Dr Chazan, works from his collection, & new submissions by RI Artists. Also enjoy sips, snacks, and live music as part of the weekly Thursday Night TroopTop celebration!

We will leave at 6:00 pm from the Graduate Hotel at 11 Dorrance Street, and return to the Graduate around 8:00 pm.

This tour will be led by Gallery Night Guide Rosemary Rocchio and will be via trolley or mini coach. We will visit the following locations and exhibits:

  • BankRI Turks Head Gallery showcases the work of Rachel Hulin in Photographic works from Unreliable Narrator & Equine Film Stills. Hulin uses AI to create equine-focused images, building the image through her specific directives & her unique editing process to create surprising outcomes.

  • Galerie le Domaine at Domain Properties presents a solo exhibition of the works of Neal Walsh. Walsh’s work is primarily abstract, playing with the subtleties of light & variations of forms, evoking the urban mill he began his painting career in & the rural community where he now lives and paints.

  • Stewart House welcomes Matthew Soule to discuss his process for creating & producing his wooden lamps, as well as his experience running a small business. Stewart House carries his lamps among their curated selection of home decor.

  • Anahid Ypres Art Studio. At Anahid Ypres’s studio you can get an inside look at the artist’s studio, and have the pleasure of seeing both in progress and finished paintings! Her work touches on subjects ranging from landscapes and the figure to abstracted still lifes.

We will leave at 5:45 pm from the Graduate Hotel at 11 Dorrance Street, and return to the Graduate around 7:45 pm.

This tour will be led by Gallery Night Guide Barbara Zdravesky.

This is a walking tour - make sure you wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather! We will visit the following locations and exhibits:

  • AS220 Project Space’s exhibit explores Bridges, a new book by artist Lara Henderson. Combining rainbow paper, overprinting, & images of cascading waterfalls, Henderson conveys the transmuting power of water.

  • The Gallery at 134 Collaborative / Mathewson Street Church presents an exhibit on the work of Paul Everett. Everett’s work uses real and imagined landscapes that frequently skew perspective to take the viewer on a journey and experiment with sight. In this show, he will have a mix of works in painting and marker drawing.

  • RISD Museum. The RISD Museum has a variety of different exhibits on view. On the Gallery Night tour, you can get a taste of the many amazing exhibits that the museum has to offer!
