holding, still – Dawn Watson
November 15 – December 14, 2018
Opening Reception on Gallery Night, November 15 from 5-9pm
holding, still is a solo exhibition by RICPA member, artist and activist, Dawn Watson. Her work examines the fragility of both the natural environment as well as our relationship to it and to each other. After twenty-five years as a dancer and choreographer, Watson transitioned to photography, finding affinity in the visual storytelling offered by both live performance and the captured image.
Dawn’s work has been featured online and in print, including Lenscratch and The Hand magazine among others. She has exhibited her photographs and artist books throughout the United States and Europe including the Albrecht-Kemper Museum, A Smith Gallery, Center for Fine Art Photography, PhotoPlace Gallery, Ph21 Gallery, Tilt Gallery, Tang Teaching Museum and in solo exhibitions at The Griffin Museum of Photography, the Greater Boston Stage Company and the Los Angeles Center for Photography.
“I am a hunter and gatherer, a holder of things that bring beauty and nature into my home. Referencing Vanitas and the tradition of the Dutch masters, “holding, still” creates tableaus of these objects, both precious and ordinary, natural and made, corporeal and ephemeral. As with food and flowers, time alters the substance and nature of these markers in space and memory. By creating images, I hold on, knowing at some point there will be a letting go.” — Dawn Watson
